European Finds

We just came back from a trip to Hamilton Virginia to visit Ekster Antiques. Carolyn and her husband Jon-Paul have Barn Sales on their property and in their former dairy barn a few times a year. We have yet to experience one for there has always been a conflict...so we made an appointment. Seven hours later, we loaded up our trailer, dusted off our hands, grabbed a Starbucks and made the four hour ride home. Loved every minute of it, from the almost 3 and half hours it took for us to make the first pass through all the fabulous finds cured from various European Countries to the painstaking decisions of what to take home with us. Carolyn has an unbelievable eye and a lovely warm personality to boot!

We will have some of the finds available tomorrow at our one day Summer Sale. The weather is cooperating in that it is leaving us no doubt that we have begun Summer. Can it get any hotter?

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Breakfast at Tiffany's...anyone?

It is that time of year...time to find a good book to accompany you at the beach or pool, or to stow away in your suitcase so as not to be left behind on your vacation. You don't have to leave the house to read a good summer book that causes you to keep the lights on well into the middle of the night. I have a recommendation for you that I just finished that I think you might enjoy.

Who can resist anything having to do with Tiffany's? Try watching the movie that immortalized Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's and then jump into the book, Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart.

It is a memoir of Marjorie Hart and her best friend as they arrive in New York City from the University of Iowa to attain summer positions as shopgirls in 1945. They become the first women to ever work on the sales floor at Tiffany's.  The Buffalo News states that you will need to glance up from the page periodically to reassure yourself that you are still in 2007 (the year the book was written)...that is what you get here, curiously untouched by the passage of time." Hart has a genuine gift for conveying the texture of mid-century Manhattan", reads USA Today. I say that while it is a light read, it is a must for anyone who loves reading about our past; the social mores of the time, the approach of the end of World War II, a behind the scenes peak at an iconic store and the question "Do you remember the best summer of your life?"

We also have a little affinity towards Audrey Hepburn. I hung the picture of her from Breakfast at Tiffany's above the fireplace in my daughters' sitting room off of her bedroom. I know...who needs a sitting room?????? The one girl in a family of 4 incredibly active and voracious boys maybe?  A girl who does not have even one little tiny closet in her bedroom?? What is a girl without a closet? Well we solved the no closet problem by letting Kelsey have her bedroom and the room next to hers which has closets in it as well. (remember we live in an old house and old houses have lots of little rooms in them w/ no closets). We called it the "sitting room" and that made the boys retort, after complaining quite loudly that it was not fair that she had two rooms, "That is okay, who needs a sitting room anyway, all you do is sit in it."

Now that I had the excuse to decorate TWO rooms in a "girlie" theme we went to town, using the Audrey Hepburn picture as my inspiration. Lots of black and white w/ the palest of blues as a wall color. Found this great mirror at TJ Maxx.

I carried that elegance that the picture portrayed into her bathroom with this water color of a lovely blue dress. Jennifer...yes, my artist friend got the damask dark blue stencils right on and then shaded the walls to blend in and out of blues...like the background in the water color painting.

A cute little black chandelier with teardrops was a perfect fit!

There is the tiny closet...just big enough to fit a small body in it during a wicked game of hide and seek.

There you have it...a book recommendation and some design inspiration. Does anyone have a good book to tell us about? Would love to hear it!

Happy Reading!
Meg

Happy Summer Solstice!

Wow! Look at those colors! Can Mother Nature get it any more perfectly than that?

or that?

I apologize for my lack of activity on the blog after the Barn Sale...lots of wrap up from the sale and it was the last week of school for the kids. At the end of the week we were lucky enough to kick off our Summer with a celebratory 50th Anniversary trip for my husband's parents to Mexico. It was our family's first visit there and we were all wowed by the natural beauty all around us! Tons of family time with my husband's brothers and their families.

We went jet skiing.

We swam with the dolphins and snorkeled...the waters are filled with beautiful creatures...

and the land is filled with...creatures. We had to watch our step!

We watched thrilling fire shows,

and peacefully built sand "turtles."

I was inspired by the local colorful floral and fauna. Just beautiful! I am working on a post linking those colors together with design style. (keep checking back)

But most importantly...we enjoyed spending time as a family! (sorry missing one child...we did not get one picture with all of us together except for the last night when we had the hotel photographer take shots of the 17 of us...they are on a disk and I have not loaded them yet) That is what summer is all about it! You don't have to go away to enjoy activities together...you just have to put a little preparation into planning some light activities. As we all know our kids grow up more quickly than we ever expected and before you realize it they are off to conquer the world. Our daughter leaving for college, has made that realization hit a little closer to home. It makes us realize that the others are not far behind her. In response, we have tightened the reins a little in bringing us all together and setting up activities that all of us want to participate in.

Use the internet to find out about interesting happenings that are going on in your area that you might like to do as a family. In our area you can sign up for the Main Line Neighbors emails that will come to your mailbox weekly. We have found that to be a great source. Check out your location to see if there are event sites that will do the same. One such site that is nationwide is Patch.com
You type in your town or township after Patch and those in your area will come up. You can then sign up to get a daily email with news articles from your town as well as all the special events going on.

You can even stay in your own back yard...literally!  This Saturday night is the Great American Backyard Campout. Pitch a tent or visit backyardcampout.org to find out more info!

Get creative and best wishes for a summer with slower days, later dinners that can be enjoyed outside  and bonding with family and friends!

Meg

FYI ~ Summer Solstice is another name for the 1st day of summer
